Bertie to go on 6th May

April 2, 2008

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern (at podium) announcing his resigation on the steps of Government Bulidings In my post 22nd March I asked had we entered the post-Bertie era, well today in a early morning surprise announcement Taoiseach Bertie Ahern announced that he will tender his resignation on 6th May 2008. After 11 years as Taoiseach and 31 years as a TD (member of the Irish Parliament) Bertie Ahern  leaves behind a proud legacy. A strong economy and peace in Northern Ireland. Most commentators agree that history will focus on his stewardship of Ireland into the new millennium rather than his more recent troubles at the Mahon Tribunal (set up to investigate corruption in planning matters in 1980’s & 1990’s).

A man of the people Bertie Ahern was a popular leader,  as his three successful election campaigns as leader of Fianna Fáil will testify. A Bass drinking , GAA & Manchester United supporter, he was know where ever he went not as Taoiseach (Prime Minister) but always as Bertie. Tonight as finally have to contemplate a future with out ” Our Bertie” his supporters and detractors alike will raise a glass and say with justification ” we may never see his like again “. Thanks for the memories Bertie.
